We're listening to the west end of BNSF's Stockton Subdivision.

BNSF 4761 switching Northbay, UPS's Northern California hub.
The Stockton sub. covers Fresno to Richmond, CA. Toward the west end the line travels through Franklin Canyon, and ends at Richmond Yard, the Westernmost terminus on the Sante Fe.

For dispatching purposes, the line is split further into two Subdivisions, The Stockton Sub. (Fresno to Oakley) and the Port Sub. Oakley to Richmond. (confusing?) also in our "scan list" are the radio frequencies used in and around Richmond Yard and North Bay (UPS's Northern California hub on the BNSF, located five miles north of Richmond.)

The receiver is located in San Francisco, CA so our listening is biased to the western end (Richmond) but transmissions can be heard as as far away as Stockton and Riverbank. The Port sub is dispatched using Track Warrant Control with the exception of a small quarter mile segment of CTC in Port Chicago.

You'll hear the Port Dispatcher" giving warrants to trains between Richmond Yard and Oakley. Fresno to Oakley is mostly CTC. Amtrak's San Joaquins traverse the line between Port Chicago and Fresno and you'll often hear them getting authority at Port Chicago where they interchange with the UP. You may also hear the "0-11 Road-switcher" or it's counterpart the "Midnight local" which have authority between UP's East and West yards in Oakland (via trackage rights) and Monsanto. They service industries such as North Bay, Asbury Graphite and the Coke plant in Franklin Canyon. Some train symbols you may hear are the

Technical info

The Radio is a Motorola Maxtrac commercial mobile radio. It's connected to an Antenex Y-1505 5 element Yagi which is pointed toward Oakley. The antenna is located at about 350 feet above sea level in San Francisco, CA. It is connected to the receiver with Belden 9913 coax. A Decibel DB4170 bandpass cavity is inline to prevent intermod and receiver desense. Audio from the receiver is fed through a Behringer Composer Pro compressor/expander and then into the encoding computer, a 266Mhz Cyrix based machine running Redhat Linux and encoded using the Darkice live audio streamer. This machine also encodes the UP Bay stream concurrently. The streams are then sent to a local shoutcast server (linux) for mass distribution.  Thank you to Jim Groenke for providing the receivers
