Norfolk Southern West Virginia Secondary

The radio and antenna are located just a few yards from the NS West Virginia Secondary line in Nitro, WV. This line which branches off in Columbus, OH serves two daily freight trains, 380 & 381 which both do pickup/setoff in the Nitro Yard, located 0.8 miles north of the antenna. The Nitro Local, usually using the "J1J" symbol can be heard switching out cars in the Nitro Yard during the weekdays usually in the mid-afternoon hours, sometimes later depending on rail traffic. The J1J serves a few industries nearby including, RJ Recycling located 1.5 miles south of Nitro, and the Institute Yard, located 2.0 miles south of Nitro. The 380 & 381 also switch out cars at the Institute Yard which is a medium sized industrial park home to many industries including Bayer Crop Science, DOW, and many others. A local, usually using the "J1E" symbol is based out of Institute and is used for switching out the tank cars at various facilities. The bulk of traffic traveling the WV Secondary is coal. Southbound empty hopper trains can be heard traveling through Nitro towards Dickinson where they terminate. Upon arrival into Dickinson, they travel up multiple coal branches and eventually return to Dickinson Yard with loads. Just south of Dickinson is the connection to the old Virginian main which runs south towards Princeton, WV and eventually connecting to the NS Bluefield mainline. Another yard located on the NS WV Secondary is just north of the WV/OH border near Point Pleasant in a small town called Hobson, OH. Hobson Yard is a crew change point for Northbound & Southbound trains traveling the Secondary. Trains traveling north out of Hobson can be heard by visiting the South Central Ohio Feed. The NS West Virginia Secondary is covered by track authority numbers instead of signals. The NA Dispatcher in Bluefield gives out these "warrants" to trains traveling north and southbound.
