This stream covers four of the Puget Sound Area's freight-only shortlines in addition to a very well-known Tourist Stream Railroad. We are listening to Tacoma Rail, Puget Sound and Pacific, Meeker Southern Railroad, Ballard Terminal Railroad, and the Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad. There is alot of traffic to be heard from these five railroads. Tacoma Rail is our main focus with their seven channels and many switch jobs.

Tacoma Rail - Tacoma, Wa

Tacoma Rail is owned by the City of Tacoma and is a part of Tacoma Public Utilities. Tacoma Rail has a long history that includes the city acquiring a few different railroads. Formally the Tacoma Municipal Belt Line, Most of Tacoma Rail’s trackage is ex Milwaukee Road. When the Milwaukee Road met its demise,  the tracks in the Tacoma’s tide flats, now known as the “Tidelands" Division, were acquired by the city, while what is now known as the “Mountain" Division was acquired by Weyerhaeuser and used to haul logs from Centralia to Tacoma. The city acquired that portion of the line in the late 90’s. In 2004 Tacoma Rail acquired the “Capitol” division and serves various industries in the downtown Olympia area. This  scheduled-job also has trackage rights from Centennial to Nisqually over BNSF Mainline which enables it to serve industries on BNSF’s Lakeview Sub.

Tacoma Rail has a nice google map of their service territory on their website. The map can be accessed here.

They began operations on August 30, 1997. It is a division of RailAmerica . The PS&P interchanges with the BNSF and the UP near Centralia, Washington. From there, the line reaches west to Grays Harbor, Washington and Northeast to Bangor, Washington. The line operated by the PS&P was purchased from BNSF in August of 1997. Much of the line was originally constructed by the Puget Sound & Grays Harbor Railroad in 1890. The NP purchased this line from Summit to Montesano shortly after the PS&GH started operations. The NP then completed a line from Centralia to Elma and from Montesano to Grays Harbor bringing rail service to Grays Harbor in 1892. The PS&P primarily operates Monday through Friday, interchanging with BNSF and the UP each night at Centralia. This train returns to Elma where it is separated into trains for Grays Harbor and Bangor, both leaving Elma in the mornings.

The steam receiver is a Motorola Spectra connected to a TrainTenna™ outdoor antenna mounted 30 feet above the house. The house is located on the West Hill of Des Moines, Wa approx 200ft above the valley. We also have an Advanced Receiver P150VDG RF Preamp to help boost the signal into the receiver. The receiver is connected to a Compaq Proliant DL580 4x700mhz rack mounted server which is running VMWare. This stream is being run on a virtual instance of Windows 2003 enterprise Server and Winamp/Shoutcast DSP 1.9.1 to encode the audio which is fed to the Shoutcast Distributed Audio Server.
