CSX Operations:

CSX has the most extensive operations in Baltimore.  Their east coast mainline passes right through town, in addition traffic also moves to the west out of Baltimore via Cumberland.  CSX operates 5 yards in town.

  • Curtis Bay - This yard located at the end of the Curtis Bay Branch also has a car shop, and recieves a large amount of coal traffic destined for CSX's Curtis Bay coal pier located adjacent to the yard.  Other traffic includes ethanol for the nearby Kinder Morgan facility, and autoracks for the Port of Baltimore.  Q276 and Q373 terminate at Curtis Bay, while Q353, and Q261 originate out of Curtis Bay.    
  • Bayview Yard - CSX's main facility on the east side of town. This flat switched yard along the mainline is worked by Q031, Q032, Q388, Q409, and Q410.
  • Locust Point Yard - Flat switched yard just south of downtown, located at the end of the Locust Point Branch is worked by Q389. This yard is where Q398 terminates, and Q235 originates. In addition MARC has engine facilities and a storage yard here for their Camden Line trainsets.
  • Mt Winans Yard - Flat switched yard located on the main just west of Carroll. This yard is used for car storage for various local industries
  • Mt Clare Yard - Flat switched yard located on the Mt Clare Branch used for coal train storage, and car storage for local industries.

Norfolk Southern Operations:

Though NS plays second fiddle to CSX in this town, they are still quite busy.  Due to the fact that NS must utilize Amtrak between Baltimore and Perryville, most road freights run after dark.  Road freights have been known to make daylight appearences on Amtrak on occasion though. NS operates one yard in town, Bayview, adjacent to Amtrak's NEC.  This hump yard is the base for many locals working local industries along Amtrak, and various NS branches in the area.  All traffic out of Baltimore runs west to Harrisburg via the Port Road which connects to Amtrak's NEC at PERRY interlocking at Perryville, MD.

      • President St Branch
        • Extends from the south end of Bayview Yard at BAY interlocking on AMTRAK south to the Canton coal yard, and the CONSOL receiving yard.  Some common locations on the branch referenced:
          • Trappe - Connecting track to CSX Sparrows Point Industrial Track located just north of the Lombard St overhead brdige.
          • Bank - Holding point for northbound traffic, just north of the Eastern Ave underpass.
          • O'Donnell - Holding point for southbound traffic just north of grade crossing at O'Donnell St.
          • Boston St - One of two grade crossings on the President St Branch.  Just south of the crossing there is a onnection to the CONSOL departure yard, and the Bear Creek Running Track diverges
          • Truck train switch - The switch to the Lombard St intermodal terminal located underneath the Lombard St overpass.      
          • Coal Yard - located at the south end of the President St Branch adjacent to the I-95 Ft Mc Henry Tunnel toll plaza.  
          • 5th Avenue Yard - located along the Bear Creek Running Track, adjacent to S. Newkirk St, this yard is used to interchange cars with the Canton Railroad
      • Bear Creek Running Track
        • Diverges from the President St Branch just south of Boston St, and runs south to the Dundalk Marine Terminal.
      •  Sparrows Point Branch
        • Diverges from Amtrak at POINT interlocking, and runs south to the Tracepoint Atlantic Railroad interchange at Sparrows Point.

      Canton Railroad is a shortline operating in southeast Baltimore interchanging with both CSX and NS.  Canton's operations are based out of Penn Mary Yard.  They typically run 3 crews depending on business needs Monday through Friday.  Canton Railroad serves the following customers
