AS YOU PROBABLY KNOW, THERE HAS BEEN A TAKEOVER BATTLE OVER THE KANSAS CITY SOUTHERN, WHICH WOULD HAVE AN IMPACT ON LOUISIANA SERVICE.  IT APPEARS THAT KCS WILL BE MERGED WITH THE CANADIAN PACIFIC, WHICH WILL BE BAD ENOUGH FOR LOUISIANA, BUT NOT AS BAD AS IF THE CANADIAN NATIONAL HAD BEEN SUCCESSFUL WITH ITS BID.  EITHER BID WOULD RESULT IN THE KCS BEING DISMANTLED BY HEDGE FUND OPERATORS ON WALL STREET.  AS WITH PAST MERGERS, THERE WILL BE LINE ABANDONMENTS, SPINOFFS, LAYOFFS, AND SERVICE REDUCTIONS.  MOST AT RISK WOULD BE THE KCS AIRLINE BETWEEN NEW ORLEANS AND BATON ROUGE, BECAUSE IT DUPLICATES THE CN.  IT WILL PROBABLY BE ABANDONED, OR POSSIBLY TURNED INTO A HIKING TRAIL.

Stream Details:

  • The Spillway bridge has now been replaced with a concrete structure.  Speed limit has been increased from 10 to 60 mph.  .
  • You are hearing Desk 5 Homewood, Illinois, mostly coming off of a transmission tower at Hammond, Louisiana, located across the street from the Amtrak Station in downtown .
  • Positive Train Control (PTC) has been implemented for the McComb and Hammond Subdivisions.  A desk 6 was set up for administration of PTC, and it is unknown if that desk continues to be in operation today.
  • If conditions are right, there may be other towers coming in, such as at Kentwood or LaPlace, Louisiana.
  • The Canadian National dispatcher is most active at night for freights, and in the early afternoon for the two Amtraks.  Amtrak is switching locomotive power from General Electric P42 to Siemens Mobility Charger on the City of New Orleans.  This began in September 2022. For Amtrak locations, use asm.tramsitdocs.com, for a tracking map that will show you where the trains currently are on their runs between Chicago and New Orleans.
  • Amtrak has mostly resumed from its Covid shutdown, but still does not run trains 58 and 59 on weekends. Unless there is a rail strike, Amtrak is now showing weekend reservations being available starting in late October 2022.
  • At the south end of the Natalbany siding is the junction between the Hammond Subdivision and the McComb Subdivision.  Trains headed to/from Baton Rouge come in to Hammond from the west.
